Believe it or not, the best man does actually have duties, duties for which he is socially responsible. Granted, the list of responsibilities are nothing like the list for the maid of honor, but nevertheless you should make sure that your groom and best man for the ceremony are aware of what they are responsible for. Now, as I’m sure you know, every wedding is different and therefore your best man’s duties may be more or less complicated than this list depending on the circumstances. But here is a list of responsibilities in which the best man is in charge of handling. To help make it easier, I’ve identified three major weddings where the best man needs to step it up and get the job done: before, during and after the wedding ceremony and reception.
Before the Wedding
The best man should be the groom’s right hand man, his personal aid if you will, and the duties can range from anything from helping him pack for the honeymoon, to making sure the other groomsmen have their tuxes and handling any small crisis that may arise. Of course, the best man also is in charge of organizing and throwing the bachelor party, and showing up to the rehearsal dinner to find out where he is supposed to stand and what to do.
During the Wedding
The duties of the best man during the wedding are to stand by the groom on the altar and hold the rings to be exchanged during the ceremony. He should also corral the other groomsmen to make sure they are where they are supposed to be. Sometimes, the groom is also the one to give the minister or officiant the envelope with their donation, which is typically the groom’s job. Also, the best man is also one to sign the marriage license as a witness, and give toasts in the wedding reception. If you are having dancing at your reception, than the best man is also expected to dance with the maid of honor as well as the bride. Also, the best man is expected to receive any cards the guests receive during their reception and keep track of them for the bride and groom.
After the Wedding
Another duty of the best man is to decorate the car the couple will be leaving in after the ceremony and reception are completed. Why do the guys get the fun jobs? The best man can certainly enlist the help of the other bridesmaids and groomsmen for the task. Also, the best man makes sure that the tuxes for the other groomsmen are returned on time.
Always remember that the wedding will be over in the blink of an eye, so be sure to enjoy yourself and make sure you don’t miss it. It’s a great day for your best friend to be getting married, and taking as much of the stress off of him is your top priority!
