When I was in college, my best friend asked me to be her maid of honor. Not knowing much about weddings then, I searched out what I was supposed to do. If you wondering, read this article: What are the Duties of the Maid of Honor. Perhaps, I think the thing I dreaded most was having to make my maid of honor speech. First of all, I’m pretty quiet to begin with, and secondly, public speaking doesn’t really top my list of favorite things to do. That is the way it is with most people though. Everyone experiences butterflies in their stomach, shaky hands, cold sweats, any number of signs of stage fright. The thing to remember about writing your maid of honor speech though, is that no matter how much public speaking scares you, you’re there for the bride. The best thing to do for any kind of speech is to write it beforehand, practice and memorize it. If you can’t memorize, or are worried that you’ll forget with all the stress, then bring a note card along. The more you practice, the more comfortable you’ll be when you deliver it. If you need help coming up with ideas of what to say in your maid of honor speech, here are some great tips to help you get started.
Make Them Laugh
You need to be careful with this one. We’ve all heard people get up to do a speech, take a stab at a joke and fail miserably. You don’t want this to happen to you. Neither do you want an inside joke that only you and the bride will understand. The best way to do this is to think of some stories from the times before the wedding when you and the bride were the best of friends. You can talk about the silly things you used to do together, and how you became such good friends. Talk about how all growing up she swore she would never marry a man who ______, and then compare that to the groom. Another ideas is to start talking about what the bride used to tell you about the groom when they first started dating, it’s easy to make a funny story out of that.
Give Something from the Heart
While humor is always good, be sure to be serious some as well. You can tell them how great they look together, how well they compliment each other, or verses with a blessing for the couple. If you like writing poetry or songs, write one especially for the couple, and read the lyrics in your speech. You don’t even have to write one, just find a famous poem or quote that you can use. Give them your well wishes for the future, and some wedding advice that they can use, and wish them a long and happy life together.
Absolute DO NOTS:
There are some things you will really need to stay away from when writing and delivering your maid of honor speech. Some of these you should know just from basic accepted social conduct.
- First, don’t get too personal about the bride or groom or their guests, or you could end up embarassing them or yourself, as well as starting a fight.
- Secondly, don’t improvise your whole speech, as you could start rambling, and end up making no sense at all.
- Last, don’t focus on any problems they’ve had in the past, if and, let them to be able to focus on their happy day.
Remember that your maid of honor speech should come from the heart. The best man will mainly focus on his relationship to the groom, as described in the following article, Best Man Speeches and Toasts, therefore it is your responsibility to focus on the bride. Be sure to give the bride something special to remember after the wedding day.
