How to Choose a Great Diamond

Wedding Rings / Jewelry Add comments

Me and my hubby with our rings! So you are engaged, or you want to be. Many men today are waiting until after the engagement to pick out a ring with their fiance to ensure the ring chosen is one that suits her perfectly. Most guys are clueless when it comes to what women want, specifically their woman, when it comes to an engagement ring or a wedding ring. Face it, diamonds are a girl’s best friend, and nearly every woman knows what she wants in a ring. If you want to surprise your lady with the ring of her dreams, but don’t know anything about diamonds, then just keep reading. I’ll tell you about the Four C’s, and what to look for when choosing a diamond ring for that special someone.

1. Color

Despite what you have seen or heard, not all diamonds are colorless. Diamonds become colored when certain elements such as nitrogen or boron mix with the carbon when the diamond is being formed. Colorless diamonds are very rare, and therefore very expensive. The rating system for diamond color is called the GIA, and it ranks diamonds by letters depending on their color. Letters D-F are considered colorless, and the rating goes down to letter Z, which is a visably tinted diamond, and considered low quality.

2. Clarity

Clarity describes the clearness of the diamond. The clarity rating signifies the number of flaws present, if any. The rating system for clarity is also described by letters, but are not sequential like the GIA rating. Below are the categories for clarity.

  • (F) - Flawless
  • (IF) - Internally Flawless (no internal flaws, slight external flaws)
  • (VVS1 & VVS2) - Very very slightly flawed, with level 1 and 2
  • (VS1 & VS2) - Very slightly flawed, with level 1 and 2
  • (SI1 & SI2) - Slightly flawed, with level 1 and 2
  • (I1, I2 & I3) - Flaws are obvious to the naked eye, with levels 1,2 and 3

3. Cut

This tells us about the shape and proportions of a diamond. The cut of a diamond is essential to its beauty. If the cut is poor, even if the color and clarity are superb, the diamond will lack any sparkle.

4. Carat

This tells us how much your diamond weighs, or the size of your diamond. One carat is one-fifth of a gram or 1/142 of an ounce. A carat is divided into 100 points, so a 1/2 carat diamond is 0.5 carats.

Buying a diamond ring is both an emotional and financial decision. When choosing a ring, decide how much you can spend, and how pure you want the diamond to be. If you are wanting a nice diamond, but can’t handle the dent in your pocketbook, there are many diamond brokers and wholesale diamonds that can be bought and placed into a setting. Be sure you have all documentation and GIA forms before purchasing a diamond to ensure that you are purchasing a diamond and not a cheap knock off.
