Ask any little girl in school or at play, and she can tell you all about traditional wedding dresses. That’s not only because little girls are dreaming of their dream weddings so early, and trust me, they are. It’s because from the time we women are just little girls, we have an idea of our dream wedding dresses, or at least what traditional wedding dresses should look like. Maybe it’s because of weddings we attend where we see the beautiful white flowing gown the bride is wearing, or maybe it’s just a part of our daily play routine to dress up in white pillow cases playing make believe that we were wearing the many beautiful traditional wedding dresses that we have available to us today. No matter where the idea of traditional wedding dresses came from, there are traditional wedding dresses that every woman can describe. But believe it or not, traditional wedding dresses used to look much different. Here are some great facts about traditional wedding dresses, where they came from and more.
Traditional Wedding Dresses - Looking Into the Past
Wearing white traditional wedding dresses is still relatively knew, it started back in the Victorian era. Before that, brides wore all different colors and materials which varied due to their social standing and their own view of traditional wedding dresses.
In the more ancient days, brides chose to wear bright colored wedding dresses to symbolize their happiness and joy at the wedding. Medieval brides had to dress in a manner that set her family in a favorable light, for she was representing her family on her wedding day. Thus, traditional wedding dresses for medieval brides in well to do society consisted of wearing layers of velvet, silk, and even furs, while those brides of a lower social standing wore more simple fabrics. Wearing white did not signify purity as it did today, blue did. In those days, blue was the color of traditional wedding dresses, and the height of wedding dress fashion. Then, in 1840 Queen Victoria got married wearing a beautiful white wedding dress, and the trend soon caught on.
Traditional Wedding Dresses - Present Day
These days, traditional wedding dresses are white. In fact, these days the vision of white creating the most traditional wedding dresses is so ingrained in our culture that it is very rare for brides to get married in any other color. While many brides may choose to add a splash of color or other type of design to their wedding dress, a majority of brides see traditional wedding dresses as being all white, floor-length bridal gowns. Many shades of white have also become acceptable wedding dress colors for traditional wedding dresses, from ivory to off white, and various shades of cream. It is considered bad luck and often frowned upon to get married in any other color besides the typical white traditional wedding dresses.
Today many traditional wedding dresses are starting to get a new look. While many brides choose to stay with the traditional wedding dresses being white only, other brides are experimenting with the look of adding a bit of color to their wedding dresses to help make them stand out from the crowd. Will our society ever go back to the blues, greens and pink wedding dresses that made up our history so long ago? Hard to tell, but brides most certainly still consider an all white color to be the most traditional wedding dresses.
