Green weddings are a popular wedding theme for couples looking to be environmentally friendly on their wedding day. Many couples who are planning a green wedding may also be looking at the possibility of taking a volunteer honeymoon instead of the traditional kind of honeymoon at a resort or something. Volunteer honeymoon’s may not be popular with every couples, some couples find that spending time helping people and groups in need is more important and fulfilling than simply indulging in a dream vacation. So, if you are looking at extending the idea of helping the environment with a green wedding, then you might want to look at spending your honeymoon volunteering for some kind of a charitable project or organization. Here are some great ideas for volunteer honeymoons, as well as some things you may want to look out for.
Why choose a Volunteer Honeymoon?
Couples who want to have a green wedding show that they are already concerned about the environment, and want to take the necessary steps to protect it.
Being able to dedicate your time and energy to a group or cause that truly needs help is a great way to get active in protecting the environment. Another great upside to a volunteer honeymoon is that you get the opportunity to see and experience things and parts of the world that you may miss if you were only staying at a resort. Just going to a resort will not help you learn about a particular country’s cultures and beliefs. Choosing a volunteer honeymoon may not be as nice as staying in a resort, but you’ll definitely get a feel for the area, people and cultures in which you’re visiting. Can’t beat it.
How to Plan a Volunteer Honeymoon
While it always seems difficult to plan any kind of honeymoon, planning a volunteer honeymoon can be just as difficult if not more so to decide where to go and how to help. Perhaps the best way to plan is to choose a cause for which you and your spouse are interested in. There are a number of websites that can connect you with trusted volunteer programs around the world with any of the causes that are of particular interest to you. CharityGuide.org is a great place to start. There are so many volunteer honeymoon options available to you that it’s best to start early to help you decide.
Volunteer Honeymoons - What to Expect
When planning a volunteer honeymoon, don’t think that your trip will be free of charge. As many of these organizations are charity organizations, you should be aware that the programs usually won’t offer to pay for your airfare or travel expenses. In fact, many volunteer programs may charge you to take part in some of their activities to help pay for materials and other supplies. So be sure to check carefully how much each trip will cost so that you are prepared for the trip. Also, you should be flexible with the dates for your volunteer honeymoon. Volunteer programs often have start and end dates, and while some may only be a few days long, others may be several months, so be sure to watch for that as well.
Volunteer honeymoons are a great way for the couple to give back to the community after their wedding to help stabilize them once they get back to reality after their wedding. Plus, if you are interested enough in saving the environment to have a green wedding, then a volunteer wedding may be just what you need to get your friends and family aware of the causes you are interested in.

Although that seems like a noble gesture, it kind of takes away from the rest and relaxation aspect of the the honeymoon. Maybe I am just selfish, but I would hate to have gone on my honeymoon and end up working and come back to a new marriage (and a job) unrested.
