It’s always hard to tell just how much everything should cost when you’re working on your wedding planning. I know that before our wedding I had never had to host a party where I was serving food to 150 people, and I really wanted to make sure that I was getting a good deal for the amount of money that I was spending. Like most young couples, we were on a fixed budget, and wanted the most wedding that we could get for our money. One problem that I really had to deal with when I was doing my wedding planning was to figure out what good wedding cake prices were, and how to tell if some of the bakeries I was visiting were wanting to overcharge me on their cakes or not. So if you are going through what seems like endless brochures and pricing sheets on wedding cake prices, and still feel like you don’t know anything about them, I’m here to help you out. Here are some average wedding cake prices, and some different things that can rack up your wedding cake prices.
Average Wedding Cake Prices
First of all, wedding cake prices are calculated by the number of servings that you will be ordering. So, if you’re planning on 200 guests for your wedding reception, be prepared to multiply your number of guests by the baker’s price per serving. Most wedding cake prices fall into a range of $1.60 to about $6.00 a slice. So be sure to do the math when you’re talking to different bakeries to get an idea about how much your wedding cake will cost.
How Big Should My Wedding Cake Be?
You should try and plan for each guest to have a slice of your wedding cake, but some experts advise to order just a few slices less than the number of people who have sent in their RSVP. Reason being, some guests will not to eat any cake, and sometimes people who have RSVP’d will still not attend the reception. It’s crazy, but it’ll happen. To determine how big your wedding cake should be, here are some helpful measurements that will help you out. An 8 inch cake has 15 servings, a 12 inch cake has 45 servings, and a 16 inch cake has 90 servings. So with those three sizes you have 150 servings of wedding cake.
But you need to be aware that cake servings do not include the top tier of your wedding cake. Traditionally, the top tier of your wedding cake is for the bride and groom to take home and freeze to eat on their first anniversary. So be sure to talk to your bakery and plan accordingly.
Factors that Drive Up Wedding Cake Prices
It sort of stands to reason that the bigger the wedding cake, the higher wedding cake prices you’ll be facing. But that isn’t the only factor that can cause your wedding cake prices to climb. Basically, the more time consuming that your wedding cake is to make, due to any shapes or designs, the more costly your wedding cake is going to be. Not only that, but the more extras you add to your wedding cake, such as fruits, nuts or liquors, the higher your wedding cake prices are going to be. Also, the kind of wedding cake that you choose can cause your wedding cake prices to skyrocket. Typically wedding cheesecakes are astronomical, rising above the high end of $6 per slice. Ouch!
Not that you’re aware of how much the average wedding cake prices are costing, and the different factors that can increase your wedding cake prices, the better prepared you can be to know how much you’ll be looking to pay for your wedding cake. Personally, my husband and I had a smaller wedding cake, and had a sheet cake as backup in case the tiered cake wasn’t enough. Since a sheet cake is much easier to make and not nearly as time consuming, they’re a lot cheaper and it worked out great.

I’m gettingn married next year and looking into wedding cakes and am actually considering something slightly different - wedding cake containing chocolate brownies. This has been recommended to me by friends and I was wondering what everyone thought on the price of these cakes: http://www.cocoamoi.com/products.php?category_id=2
