A relatively new trend for wedding cakes over the past few years has been the introduction of square wedding cakes. In times past, wedding cakes were always circular tiers, but that isn’t the case anymore. Square wedding cakes have become a huge trend for brides choosing their wedding cake, and there are many different ways that you can have square wedding cakes and still have them look different from all of the other wedding cakes out there. Here are just a few of the great wedding cake designs that you can use with square wedding cakes to get the perfect look for your wedding cake, as well as a few precautions you need to be aware of when deciding whether or not you want a square wedding cake.
The Gift Wrapped or Basket Design
Perhaps the most popular way to decorate square wedding cakes is to make them look either like gifts (which there will be a lot of at your wedding), or like baskets.
This is accomplished through the use of fondant, which is very easy to shape into any design you want for your wedding cake, but doesn’t taste very good. But a skilled baker can easily shape fondant into any design you want for your wedding cake, such as an intricate basket weave around your cake, or an elegant bow with ribbons running down the sides of your cake. If you can imagine it, it can be done to decorate your wedding cake.
Square Wedding Cakes - A Different Look
Another great thing about square wedding cakes that you can do, that you can’t do with round wedding cakes is to alternate the direction of each square in your tiers. This creates a totally unique look for your wedding cake. But not only can you alternate the direction of each tier, you can also use different shapes besides squares as well. For example, some tiers of your square wedding cake can be round, heart shaped, or even hexagonal to create lots of different looks unique to your wedding. So play around with some designs until you find the look that’s perfect for what you are looking for.
Square Wedding Cakes - A Word of Warning
As I’ve been doing my research this morning on square wedding cakes, I’ve seen several sites with experts cautioning that there is the potential for square wedding cakes to cost more than a typical round wedding cake. This has been presented for two main reasons that I can tell. First of all, for some bakeries, square wedding cakes require a different set of cake pans than what they typically use for wedding cakes, causing them to have to buy separate pans to accommodate. Another reason I’ve seen is that square wedding cakes can be a little more time consuming, or difficult, to frost because of the corners on the squares. I’ve heard that it is harder to get the corners right on square wedding cakes, thus bakeries charge a small premium for the extra work.
I’m not sure if all of these reasons really add up for me or not. Basically, I think that square wedding cakes have been around long enough that any refutable bakery should already have square cake pans to be able to get the job done. If any kind of premium is going to be made for the extra work on icing the corners of the cake, I don’t really see a problem with that. After all, you’re paying for the expertise in creating this masterpiece thats a whole lot more difficult to create than you think.
