Green weddings interest me. I hadn’t heard much about them when I was planning my wedding, but now it seems as though I’m hearing about them everywhere! It seems couples everywhere are getting in on the idea to plan their wedding details in a way that isn’t going to be harmful to the environment. When I first started researching this idea, I thought that it would be really difficult to plan a green wedding, because your options for decorating might be limited, or it might be really expensive to plan a true green wedding. But a good portion of my ideas were way wrong. It happens that way sometimes I suppose. But this morning I started researching how to create a menu for your wedding that is earth-friendly to keep in line with my current series on tips and tricks for planning green weddings. I found lots of great ideas for earth-friendly menus for your wedding, so if you need help, here is a great place to start.
Creating an Organic Menu
Even couples who are not planning green weddings are wanting to eat healthier, and are thus looking to include more organic foods into their menus.
You’ll find that many caterers now are specializing in organic foods, but nearly any caterer can be organic if you let them know that is what you want. Once you choose a caterer that you like, talk to them about substituting ingredients that they use for healthier or organic alternatives. That way you won’t be exposing yourself, or friends and family to potentially harmful hormones and insecticides.
Consider Looking Locally
Depending on where you live, this could work out great for you. When planning your wedding menu, choose foods that are seasonal and perhaps local to your area. They’re more fresh than food grown out of season, and they’re also less money since they’re in season. This is a great way to give your guests a taste of the delicious foods that are readily available. For example, last year I went to a friend’s wedding in Mexico. The fresh fruits they had tasted so delicious and fresh – nothing like what we buy here in the United States! So if this is an option for you, it’s a great way to get organic homegrown food as well as to save a bit of money in the process.
Recycle, Reduce, Reuse
What’s the point of having a green wedding if you’re not going to recycle, reduce or reuse your waste to help out the environment? There are a couple of ways you can do this with your wedding menu. It’s such a waste to throw extra food into the garbage because of guests who were a no show. A great way to save that food is to work with your caterer and find a way to send the leftovers to a local homeless shelter. How’s that for not wasting food when millions are hungry?
The only downside with planning an organic menu for your wedding is that the bill you’ll have to pay will be much more expensive than if you had gone another direction. With money and food costs being the way they are today, many couples choose not to go totally organic for their weddings. But I can tell you that while organic food may be more expensive, it is also much healthier for you and tastes great. Let me know what you think.
