Maid of Honor Lives Too Far Away?

Bridal Party No Comments »

Maid of Honor Lives Too Far Away?I had someone write in a few weeks ago with a very interesting question, that I’m sure many brides face when choosing their maid of honor or bridesmaids. This young lady had just gotten engaged, and wanted to ask a very good friend of hers to be her maid of honor, but the girl lived several hours away, and didn’t know if this would work or not. She did not want to make things difficult on her friend with a lot of traveling, and I believe she really wanted someone nearby to help her out with her wedding planning if she needed it. It was an interesting question. So the question being, should you choose a maid of honor that lives far away even though they are your best friend? I believe yes. There are plenty of things a maid of honor can do over a distance to help you out in your wedding planning, and here are just a few of them to think about.

Choosing a Wedding or Bridesmaid Dress

One of the tasks that the maid of honor is typically given is to help the bride choose the dresses that the bridesmaids will wear, as well as be with the bride when she is picking out her wedding dress. This can be done from a distance, though it may be a little difficult. For the bridesmaid dresses, ask your maid of honor to look on the Internet and/or try some dresses on to come up with some favorites for bridesmaid dresses. Then, you can easily email pictures back and forth. If you really want your maid of honor to be there when you are looking at wedding dresses, and the distance between you isn’t too far away, then plan a weekend when ya’ll can get together, and run and look and bridesmaid dresses and reception venues, and anything else you want to do with her.

Planning Bridal Showers or a Bachelorette Party

The Internet is a beautiful thing. If your maid of honor wants to throw a bridal shower or bachelorette party for you, it can still easily be done from a distance. Find a location you want (like a friend’s home or a restaurant), and then via the Internet she can easily make her reservations, buy any decorations she needs, and even send invitations to invited guests without living in the same town as you.

Being the Brides Right Hand “Man”

The basic duty of the maid of honor is to be there for the bride in whatever she may need. Your maid of honor can still do this for you if she lives farther away. By means of telephone calls you need her to make, some projects your maid of honor can do on her own out of town, and much more. Plus, she should be with you a few days before the wedding so you can get some help and friend time before the wedding as well.

When my husband and I got married, his best friend lived in Alaska at the time, and we live in Texas. There was no question in his mind that he still wanted his best friend to be his best man, and they just made it work. But if you think about it, the best man really doesn’t have as many duties as the maid of honor does, and it kind of got me to thinking a little bit. Hopefully this article has been a help to you, and if you have any more questions or examples about how this has worked out for you in the past, don’t hesitate to write and ask.

Bachelorette Party Ideas

Bridal Party 4 Comments »

Bachelorette Party IdeasNow typically, the maid of honor is in charge of planning and coming up with different bachelorette party ideas (see Duties of the Maid of Honor) to give the bride and her bridesmaids a good time before the wedding takes place, as well as a break from all the wedding planning that the bride has been doing. In some rare circumstances though, the bride is left to helping the maid of honor come up with bachelorette party ideas, or even plan it herself. Such was my case, for different reasons, my maid of honor was unable to help me with a lot of the duties that being the maid of honor entailed. Sometimes it can be hard coming up with different bridal shower ideas, and bachelorette party ideas. So if you are the maid of honor looking for different bachelorette party ideas, or a soon to be bride looking for ideas to help out your maid of honor, then you’re in luck. I’ve been to several bachelorette parties, and have seen what works and what doesn’t, and have some great ideas to help you get started planning your bachelorette party.

Make Your Bachelorette Party Creative

One really fun thing that I almost did for my bachelorette party was to have an art party. Let me explain. There is a place nearby that allows groups to rent a room and paint pottery. There is a sitting fee and price for the kind of pottery that you want to paint, and the group can decorate anything they want to, and stay for a number of hours. Have all of the bridesmaids paint something, like a plate for the bride to decorate her new house with, and it makes a great memory for the bride as well. Add a meal out with the girls, and you’ve got a great bachelorette party that can be a lot of fun.

Make Your Bachelorette Party Tropical

Depending on the time of year, and your location, you can have a “tropical” bachelorette party. Plan a beach or pool party, complete with Hawaiian leis, little plastic cups with the paper umbrellas, and have a great time. Different activities such as hula contest, pinata, and much more can help bring your tropical bachelorette party alive. Bring food out to the event, or have a bonfire so that everyone can participate.

Make Your Bachelorette Party a “Killer”

My sister’s bachelorette party was a lot of fun. A group of ladies took a trip out of town to Austin, where a Murder Mystery Dinner was held every night, care of a local theatrical group. The actors were extremely entertaining, interacting with the guests and they really were pretty funny. On top of that, at the end everyone could fill out a piece of paper to guess who the murderer was. The food was great, the actors were funny, and everybody had a really great time.

Just because you are having a bachelorette party does not mean that it has to include bar hopping and male strippers. A bachelorette party can just be a time and fun and relaxation, to spend some quality time with friends, and most importantly, to help the bride relax and not stress over the wedding planning details for a while. Wedding Hairstyles with Flowers

Wedding Hairstyles 1 Comment »

Wedding Hairstyles with FlowersSometimes it can be hard choosing from the many different wedding hairstyles that are available to you. Personally, I know I looked through dozens of photo galleries of different wedding hairstyles, and had a really hard time picturing what those styles would look like on me. See my article on Wedding Hairstyles. One thing that I kept noticing while going through all of the photo galleries of wedding hairstyles was that a good number of the brides chose not to go with Bridal Tiaras or combs, or other kind of Wedding Hairstyle Accessories, but instead chose to deck their mane with beautiful fresh and fragrant flowers. It really is a great idea, wearing a flower or flowers in your hair is much less expensive than a bridal tiara, and fresh flowers add a touch of elegance and grace your wedding hairstyle. There are many different types of wedding hairstyles with flowers, but here are some ideas from what I saw while looking through all of my photo galleries.

Wedding Hairstyles with Flowers for Long Hair

Personally, I love having long hair. There are so many different things you can do with it, that you can create nearly any kind of wedding hairstyles that you like. I’ve seen wedding hairstyles with flowers where the bride just had her hair down and wavy, with a beautiful flower behind her ear or several flowers pinned into the curls down her back. I’ve even seen one wedding hairstyle with flowers where the bride left her hair down and wavy, and then pulled back small sections of hair from each side, drawing them together and attaching a flower, and doing that several times down her back. It was very elegant.Other wedding hairstyles with flowers can be an updo with a chignon or fancy ponytail and a beautiful flower or flowers pinned into it. French twists with flowers pinned in are beautiful in long hair as well.

Wedding Hairstyles with Flowers for Short Hair

If you have short hair then some of the options above for wedding hairstyles with flowers may not be available for you. But don’t think that just because you have short hair that you can’t have a totally stunning wedding hairstyle with flowers too. See my article on Wedding Hairstyles for Short Hair, and you’ll find that just isn’t true. Depending on your hair length, you can curl your hair, pinning flowers in the curls. Another popular wedding hairstyle with flowers is to simply add a glossing serum to your hair, and then pin a beautiful flower behind your ear. Another popular wedding hairstyle with flowers that I’ve seen is to have a headband and attach some flowers, also beautiful.

Flowers are beautiful creations in nature, representing love. Their sweet smell and soft texture will only help to add to your elegance on your wedding day. If you are interested in wedding hairstyles with flowers, then be sure to talk to your florist as well as your hairstylist to help you choose a flower, color, and how many flowers you would like to use.

How to Make Pew Bows

Church Decorations 1 Comment »

How to Make Pew BowsThis is a continuation of a previous article, Do I Need Church Decorations, and I thought I would explain one of the points in the article. I talked about how my aunt and I ran to every Wal-Mart in the Dallas area buying out a particular silver ribbon and pulling an all-nighter to create enough pew bows for the church. Lucky for me, our church only has fourteen pews, so it wasn’t a huge project, but still quite an undertaking for us who didn’t know what we were doing. Up until a few weeks before the wedding, I hadn’t even thought of purchasing or designing church decorations. I knew I wanted them, but just didn’t know what to do, and so I pushed it out of my mind. When I finally decided to start looking at church decorations, I went to my florist, and they wanted to charge me around $20 per pew bow!!! No way! So I went to my aunt’s house in Dallas, and we set to work on learning how to create pew bows. So, if you are like I was before the wedding, searching for church decorating ideas, and want to learn how to make pew bows, I’ll tell you how we did it.

Pick Out a Ribbon for Your Pew Bows

The first thing you need to do is to pick out what kind of ribbon you want to use for your pew bows. I chose a sparkly silver wire ribbon that was about 2 or 3 inches wide. I found that for the size of pew bow I wanted, I would need one roll of ribbon per pew bow, not even to mention the tails (sorry, I’m not sure of the “technical” name, but the two pieces of ribbon that hang down from the pew bow) .

Start Making Your Pew Bow

Okay, let me start out by saying that neither of us were very crafty, but we were willing to try. So, what I’m explaining will work, but may not be how ‘professionals’ would advise making a pew bow, so take it with a grain of salt. We started out by deciding how wide we wanted the bow to be. Wanting it to be about 10 inches in diameter, we took the end of the ribbon and laid out 10 inches on the table, then looped the ribbon back to the starting edge of the ribbon, and we kept looping the ribbon back and forth until we had about 5 loops, getting a little smaller on each of the loops. Then, with the ribbon left over, we wrapped it around the middle of the bow, and hot glued it there. We then measured out ribbon for the tails of the pew bow, and hot glued that to the back of the pew bow. Again, probably not the most professional method for creating a pew bow, but like I said, it works.

Decorating Your Pew Bow

Once you have your pew bows created, you may want to add some decoration to them. For example, I wanted the first few rows of pews to be for family members, so I decorated some of the pew bows with peach ribbon roses a friend had made, and the other pew bows with small white silk flowers, where everyone else would sit. Those also, were attached with super glue. Hey, all the ladies in my family were teachers, super glue works on nearly anything!

Hanging Your Pew Bow

Depending on the type of pews that your church has, you will need some plastic pew clips (can be purchased at any craft store), pipe cleaner, or other type of wire to hang your pew bows. Be sure to try it a variety of different ways to find out what works best for your wedding ceremony location and budget. What ended up working for us to to hot glue pipe cleaners to the back of the pew bow, which were then easily attached to the pew clip and hung on the side of the pew.

Like I’ve said before, this is probably not the most professional way to create a pew bow, but they looked great, and worked perfectly for our wedding ceremony. Let me know if you have any questions on the directions, I tried to be as descriptive as possible, but I know it can still be confusing. If you look at the previous article to this one, Should I Have Church Decorations, the picture in that article is of the finished product of our pew bows and decorating. If pew bows aren’t for you, and you want more ideas for pew decorations, then check out my other article called Pew Decoration Ideas.
