Weddings are a joyous occasion, one filled with love, hope for a beautiful future together, excitement in planning the most important day of your life, and anxiety on hoping that everything goes off without a hitch. But now with today’s economy and brides having to look for new and more inventive ways to save money on their weddings, a lot of the old trends for weddings are taking a more economical approach.  Our tight economy has many brides using iPods instead of hiring a wedding DJ, afternoon weddings with cake and punch receptions instead of a fancy sit down dinner, and homemade wedding cakes instead of the more expensive bakery wedding cake. Homemade wedding cakes can be a great place to save money on your wedding by having a close friend or family member having such a large part in your wedding day. Homemade wedding cakes are the best way to have a truly unique and personalized wedding cake, which many times is even made by the bride herself. But if you’re wondering how a normal everyday girl can create homemade wedding cakes to impress, here are some great facts you should know.

Cupcake Wedding CakesAre you one of those people who think that cupcakes taste better than a slice of regular cake? If so, then you’re not alone. One hot new trend that is circulating among brides for the past few years is to have cupcake wedding cakes instead of the traditional three tiered wedding  cake. Wonder why they’re so popular? Just think about it, each guest at your wedding gets their own miniature decorated wedding cake so you don’t need people to cut the cake, plus it says alot about your unique personality and style to have cupcake wedding cakes instead of the standard kind. But those aren’t all of the great benefits about cupcake wedding cakes. Some brides worry about how to display cupcake wedding cakes, or even that their wedding will look like a five year old’s birthday part, but there is no need to fear! Cupcake Wedding Cakes

Wedding Cake No Comments »

Cupcake Wedding CakesThere are lots of people out there, in my family especially, who will swear up and down that cupcakes actually taste better than regular larger sized cakes. Personally, I don’t know if they taste better or not, or if it’s just a mental thing about having your own little cake – but I guess it doesn’t matter too much. When my cousin got married a few years ago and wanted a cupcake wedding cake for his groom’s cake, our family wasn’t really surprised at all. It had been my first time seeing a cupcake wedding cake, and it actually went over pretty well. Turns out, that a few years ago, you really didn’t see bakeries offering cupcake wedding cakes as part of their portfolio. That’s because brides just weren’t interested in having cupcake wedding cakes, else they didn’t know that they could be done in the place of regular wedding cakes. But wouldn’t you know it, give it some time and now it seems that cupcake wedding cakes are really where it’s at right now. Here are frequently asked questions about cupcake wedding cakes to help you decide if they are right for you or not.

Why are Cupcake Wedding Cakes so Popular?

Cupcake wedding cakes are popular because they are so different than your traditional wedding cake.

Wedding Cake Topper

Wedding Cake No Comments »

Wedding Cake TopperRemember the old fashioned wedding cake topper that consisted of a little plastic miniature of a bride and groom on top of an all white cake? The little bride and groom may have been under a little arch or just standing by themselves. Personally, I don’t think I’ve ever seen this kind of wedding cake topper actually used in a wedding, but then again, that could just be me. Brides today are going for different, unique and something different than what their parents and grandparents have done for years. Wedding cake toppers are a great way to add some extra style and grace to your wedding cake. There are many different kinds of wedding cake toppers you can choose from, and here are some great ideas of some popular choices today.

Fresh Flowers

Flowers are always a popular choice for wedding cakes. They add grace and beauty to your wedding cake as well as having the added benefit of giving off a bit of color to match your other wedding colors. Fresh flowers are something you can work out with your florist to handle. You can have flowers on top of your cake as well as cascading down the side, or placed on each layer of your wedding cake. The choices are endless, and if you want to go this way, talk to your florist and bakery, and they will have plenty of ideas of what you can do, and what they have done in the past.

Your New Monogram

This is something that my husband and I used on our wedding cake. I visited several sites on the Internet and ordered letters to create our new families monogram. Then, it was very simple to just push it down into the cake, and the effects were beautiful. The only thing you need to consider here is how wide the letters are, and the circumference of the top layer of your cake. If you look at the picture above, that is a picture of our wedding cake, and what the monogram looks like on the cake.

Miscellaneous

One thing that brides love to do today is to make everything unique to them. I’ve seen firefighter brides stick small fire engines on their wedding cake, and I’ve even seen fruit used as wedding cake toppers as well. Colored leaves for fall, plastic cranberries and pine cones for a Christmas wedding, and even a small cowboy hat for a cowboy wedding.

Wedding cake toppers are beautiful, and they really add a lot to your wedding cake. Many people today are also choosing not to have a wedding cake topper at all. Depending on the kind of wedding cake that you choose, you may not need a wedding cake topper. See my article on Wedding Cake Designs or check out Wedding Cake Toppers for other ways you can decorate your wedding cake. Consider your wedding cake, your tastes, and what you love before making your decision. As always, if you need more information or advice, feel free to comment and let me know!
