Your wedding day is supposed to be the happiest day of your life, however, but even with months of careful planning things could still go wrong. While wedding insurance can’t always prevent things going wrong, it can cover your financial loss. Many couples take out wedding insurance in case of loss of rings or wedding dress, having to postpone the event for any reason, vendors going out of business or not showing up, just to name a few. If you are spending a large amount of money on your wedding, and it is detailed and heavily dependent on your vendors, you should really consider looking into a wedding insurance policy. It could just save you a lot of money.

I did not purchase wedding insurance for my wedding, but then again I didn’t know much about it at that time. Our wedding was done relatively inexpensively for a wedding, and much of the work was done by friends and family. The reception was dependent of course on the caterer and other such vendors, but I had never considered the fact that there was a chance they wouldn’t show up. I called each of them the day before to verify drop off and arrival times and had a schedule made on their responses. However, if anything had gone wrong, the money that I had paid to vendors would have been lost, and the stress involved with those kinds of last minute situations wouldn’t be fun either. A wedding insurance policy is there for those “just in case situations”. Luckily for me, everyone showed up as promised, and everything went relatively smoothly.

If you choose to purchase a wedding insurance policy, you should purchase wedding insurance as soon as you start putting down deposits on your wedding dress, reserving your reception location, etc. because at this point you become financially responsible. Be sure to get more than one quote in the same way you would if you were taking out an insurance policies on anything else, in order to get the best deal.

Do I Need Wedding Insurance?

Weather – If you live in an area that is prone to hurricanes, or planning a winter wedding in an area prone to blizzards or ice then wedding insurance would be a good idea in case something happens on your wedding day. If your ceremony is postponed due to weather, the right wedding insurance policy would pay for all costs associated with a whole new wedding.

Missing Vendor/Officiant – If your florist, caterer, or worse, officiant doesn’t show up on the big day, then the right wedding insurance policy will help you recover those fees of finding new vendors quickly, or in some cases the costs of a whole new wedding.

Other Unforseen - If a close family member falls sick and the ceremony needs to be postponed, your wedding photographs are lost or destroyed by the photographer, wedding location burns down, any number of things are covered by your wedding insurance policy.

Possible Riders - There are many riders you can purchase for your policy, and add extra specialized damage. A dress/tuxedo rider will cover you if your wedding dress is somehow destroyed, the location renting your tuxedos burns down, any number of things. A military rider will cover postponement fees if either the bride or groom is called to war before the ceremony. If you are having the wedding in your home, wedding liability insurance is necessary in case someone gets hurt. A gift rider will cover if the wedding gifts are destroyed or stolen, and a honeymoon rider will cover expenses lost if something terrible happens on the honeymoon. This can include lost luggage, missed flights, or even postponement if one of you falls ill.

When choosing a company to purchase your wedding insurance policy, read the fine print to ensure you are purchasing what you intend to purchase. Would you want to spend that kind of money for one day without some kind of wedding insurance policy in case something goes wrong? Or are you the risky type who hopes for the best, and if something happens will be stuck with some huge bills to pay? You will quickly find that wedding liability insurance is worth the cost.
