Creating a Wedding Budget

Wedding Budget No Comments »

By Minnie, a guest author and an editor at Modern Wedding Advice

Creating A Wedding BudgetThere are many different venues to consider when planning your wedding budget. Starting the process can really feel overwhelming. The big ticket items to keep in mind when you are outlining your budget are your venues, food, entertainment, photography, attire, and decorations. Here are some ideas on where to start, and the major things to consider so that you can come up with a wedding budget that will fit with the idea you have for your wedding.

First, you will need a rough outline- What do you already have to spend? What is your projected income from now until the wedding? How much of that can you safely allot to wedding expenses? Are there things you spend money on now that you could cut back on, such as dinners out, to save more for the wedding? Will other people be helping you financially? How much can they give, and when?  Will they be giving you money to use as you see fit, or would they be more comfortable doing something along the lines of paying your photographer directly?  The more answers you can at least guess at for these questions, the easier your outline will be.  Don’t worry about exact numbers, and the fine-tuning will come later, but it helps to know your ballpark, whether you’ll be working with $2,000 or with $15,000.  Many bills won’t need to be paid until right before the wedding, but most expenses will involve a down payment at the time you book a service.

Venue- Are you having a ceremony and reception in the same place? This can cut down on costs.  If you plan to have them at separate sites, factor in the cost of each.  If you are getting married in your house of worship, find out how much the fee is for the facility, for the officiant, the musicians, and any other fees involved.  For reception sites, call around and visit as many places as you can.  When you find some that you like, sit down and ask for an estimate.  Find out everything that is included in that estimate, and get it in writing.  Some places will charge you just for the space, and everything else is extra.  Other places charge per person for everything from the space itself to the food, service, even a wedding coordinator. There may be bar minimums included, depending on what bar service you’re including.  Gratuities may or may not be included, make sure you ask.

Food- This item can affect your budget quite a bit depending on what you choose. It often costs more to offer a choice of entrees.  A simple chicken dish will probably cost less than filet mignon.  Keep your own taste and budget in mind, and if you’re using an independent caterer, shop around. Find out whether any beverages are included.  Would you like to do an open bar, cash bar, or no alcohol?  Don’t forget your wedding cake.  Find out if there is a “cutting fee” per slice at your reception site.

Entertainment- Your DJ or bandleader will be a driving force of the party energy.  Find someone you feel matches the energy you want at your wedding.

Photography- Photography can be a big chunk of your budget.  Your wedding photos will capture this day forever, so you want to make sure you love them. A good wedding photographer will know what angles, lighting, moments are important.  Do you want a basic package and a simple album, or do you want to capture every last detail? Find someone who can give you what you’re looking for.  Do you want a videographer?  This can be expensive, and feelings vary on how important this is.  Some couples wouldn’t dream of not having a wedding video, while others can’t see spending the money.

Attire- Everyone imagines the wedding gown.  This is indeed the most expensive article of clothing you are ever likely to buy.  Is it important to you to have a designer label, or do you want to shop around until you find the right dress in your budget, no matter how long it takes?  Is wearing your Mom’s dress an option?  Expenses in addition to the dress itself include alterations, which can cost up to several hundred dollars, undergarments, veil, shoes, jewelry, etc.  The groom needs to get dressed, too- don’t forget to budget for the tux.  If you order all the tuxes for the wedding party from the same place, often times the groom’s tux rental will be free. Certainly don’t forget to budget for the wedding rings!  Other incidentals include hair and makeup the day of the wedding for the bride, and bridesmaids if this is in your budget, and boutonnieres or corsages for the bridal party, parents, and grandparents.

Decorations- If you’re really unsure of how much money you will have to spend, this is an easy place to give a minimal spot on your rough budget, then add to later.  You can use very simple, in-season flowers, non-floral centerpieces, candles, and ribbons to give a simply elegant feel to your wedding, or you can go all out and deck the hall in orchids and lillies. Linens may need to be included in this part of your budget, depending on whether or not your caterer will provide them.  Chair covers are frequently an item that have an individual fee.  Simple white tablecloths and napkins are generally more inexpensive than upgraded fancy linens.

Other expenses to budget for: Transportation- will you borrow a friend’s car, or will you hire a limo or other kind of transportation for the whole bridal party? Invitations- save the date cards, invitations and response cards, wedding programs, all need to be printed.  Favors for your guests and gifts for the bridal party and each other.  Gratuities for your various vendors.  There will probably be some unforeseen expense, but the more planning you do, the more you can minimize that risk.  Good luck, and congratulations.

Wedding Movies that Help

Miscellaneous No Comments »

Wedding Movies that HelpYou know it’s true. When women are working on their wedding decorations, they’ll look anywhere and everywhere for some great ideas to make their wedding truly unique. I did a lot of my searching on the Internet, but I also asked a lot of the women close to me what they did for advice, what worked best for them and what didn’t, and little things that they did to save some money. I also went through countless photo albums of their weddings, looking at their decoration ideas and such. Many brides scour the Internet for ideas, and talk to their friends and family, but there is another venue to use which could help you out a lot, and that is wedding movies. Personally, I’m more into action and suspense movies than movies that have weddings in them, but there are a bunch of wedding movies out there that have some great ideas on decorating, flowers, and some great unique wedding dresses. I’ve listed some of my favorite wedding movies that I think have a lot of great tips for those planning their weddings.

The Runaway Bride

Interestingly enough, I bought this movie right before we got married. (Not because I was thinking of running, I just love Julia Roberts and Richard Gere together). While I was watching the movie one evening, I noticed just how many great wedding tips and ideas that were in that wedding. I mean, she had a total of five weddings in the movie, and each one of them was different. She has outdoor weddings, church weddings, and even a themed wedding. The wedding decorations are beautiful, the dresses are all unique and out of this world. This is one of my favorite wedding movies for helping with wedding planning.

Father of the Bride

You remember the movie with Martin Short as the wedding planner? He was hilarious in the movie, but more importantly, he and his assistant created one of the most beautiful wedding movies ever. While you may not have the resources to plan the extravagant wedding that they made, there are still a lot of fabulous ideas for planning and wedding reception that is out of this world. Not only that, but wedding movies that make you laugh are great.

Sweet Home Alabama

I love Reese Witherspoon, and one of my favorite roles that she has been in is Melanie Carmichael in Sweet Home Alabama. While there is only one wedding in this movie, she looks fabulous and has a lot of great decorating ideas that couples can use for outdoor weddings.

Wedding movies are often overlooked as a way that brides can get some great information while planning their wedding. If you have any favorite wedding movies you’d like to add, please comment and let me know. Like I said above, I’m typically more the action and suspense movie lover, and am not up on all of the great wedding movies. But my favorite wedding movies made me laugh, helped me out, and were a lot of fun. So if you’re looking for ideas to help with your wedding planning, go rent some wedding movies to help you out. They’re fun to watch too.

Wedding Budget

Wedding Budget No Comments »

Wedding BudgetIf you are like most people out there, then when you are planning your wedding, you need to stay within some sort of wedding budget. Not everyone has an extra $15 grand (or more!) laying around that can be used just to plan the perfect wedding, with the best of everything, and everything just how you want it. The reality of it all is, that nearly every couple planning a wedding is having to stay very conscious of their wedding budget to make sure they don’t wind up with debt problems after the wedding. Each couples wedding budget is different, and some have larger wedding budgets than others, but just because you have a lower wedding budget doesn’t mean that your wedding has to look cheap. Perhaps your wedding budget is a sum your parents are going to help you out with, and then a certain amount of money that you and your fiance are going to use towards the wedding, or perhaps your wedding budget is being funded completely by you. Whatever the case, you’ll need to learn how to show smart, and bargain, so that you can have the wedding of your dreams and still stay within your wedding budget.

Keeping Track of your Wedding Budget

I can’t stress the importance of keeping close tabs on your wedding budget. As I girl, I know how fast expenses can add up while you’re shopping, you go out for a few items and end up spending much more than you had planned. Hence why my husband tags along when I go grocery shopping. But, back to the subject, it’s important to special attention to what you’ve spent, what you still have left to buy, and about how much money you have to spend for each thing. Perhaps the best way to do this is to start a wedding book, and include receipts, coupons, vendor names and phone numbers, and much more. Also, if you have knowledge of Excel spreadsheets, you may want to create some spreadsheets with guest lists, gift lists from showers, and other useful information. Using this method to keep track to your expenses in regard to your wedding budget can require a lot of organization and computer knowledge.

Get Help with Your Wedding Budget

If you have a friend or family who is good with organization and keeping track of money, then you could enlist their help on getting yourself set up. But this may not be available to every couple. In that case, you may want to look for some kind of wedding book or wedding software which can help you keep track of everything having to do with your wedding and your wedding budget. Check out card stores for different planners that you can buy and use, or look on the Internet for other help with your wedding budget. There is one great tool that I found on the Internet, I purchased it and it really does have a lot of great information.

I can’t tell you the importance of keeping close tabs on your wedding budget. The last thing you want when starting your new marriage is to have money problems and extra unexpected debt from the wedding. Not only that, but if you run out of money in your wedding budget while you are still buying things for the wedding, you could run into lots of different problems, creating unneeded stress on you!

Subscribe to RSS FeedOne great resource that I can offer my readers is the ability to sign up for an RSS feed from my site. In fact, if you’ve spent any time on my site, you notice that big square orange button in my side bar that allows people to sign up for my feed. Not sure what this means? Don’t worry, a lot of people out there don’t know either. And since they don’t know, they miss the opportunity to save some precious time! With an RSS feed, you can easily take advantage of signing up for your favorite blog’s RSS feeds, which can be a huge advantage for you. If you are wondering what an RSS feed is, then let me explain it real quick, and why it can be so beneficial for you to take advantage of.

What is an RSS Feed?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication (really!). Syndication for the web, defined by Wikipedia, is web feeds which make a portion of the website available to other sites and subscribers. This means, when you sign up for my RSS feed, you are basically signing up to be on my automated update list. This means that whenever I post an article to my site, you will receive a copy of it in your favorite feed reader so that you won’t miss anything.

What is a Feed Reader?

A feed reader is software that you can use to track multiple RSS feeds at one time, in one place. One popular feed reader is bloglines.com. You can sign up for a free account with them, and then you’ll have the ability to track several feeds from your favorite websites and blogs that offer RSS, and you can see all your site’s favorite articles from a single page. Nice huh? Some good news is that you have several different choices with regard to feed readers you can use. Notice next to my RSS feed button in the sidebar that you’ll see an icon for Bloglines, Add to Google, My Yahoo, Newsgator, and My AOL. If you click on one of these icons, it will take you to a screen that will allow you to easily add my feed to your choice. So, for example, since I use Yahoo for my email, I would want to click the My Yahoo button so that I can read my email and see the feeds from my favorite websites all on one page. They won’t show up as messages in your email, instead, they will be located under the Feed called “Wedding Help”, so that you can view them when you want to. If you want the messages to show up as email in your box, then simply click on the big orange button, and on the next screen, choose “Get Wedding Help delivered by email”, enter your email address and verification, and you’re off and running.

Why RSS is so Cool!

First of all, RSS feeds are totally free! Also, RSS feeds are so great because they allow you view lots of different feeds quickly and easily, without having to remember a bunch of different web addresses, and time spent surfing the Internet. Wedding Help offers an RSS feed for those who don’t always have time to come and check out the most recent articles. I know how busy planning a wedding can be, but you don’t want to miss out on some great articles that could potentially save you a bunch of money, or solve a big problem for you. This is a great resource to take advantage of to keep you abreast of everything going on. Sign up for it today, if you have any problems or have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to write in and let me know!

Outdoor Wedding Decorations

Outdoor Weddings 1 Comment »

Outdoor Wedding DecorationsAs I’ve mentioned in previous articles, my sister got married a few months ago, and she chose to have an outdoor wedding. If you are looking at an outdoor wedding, there really are several advantages you have over a typical indoor church wedding. For one thing, in my opinion at least, you have a lot less to do with outdoor wedding decorations. My sister was very lucky in planning her outdoor wedding, as the location already had outdoor wedding decorations that she could use, and in fact were already in place so she didn’t need to worry. If that isn’t your situation, maybe you have to bring your own outdoor wedding decorations, or come up with how you want to decorate on your own. Sometimes that can be a little difficult, to wonder if everything will look all right. There are several things you can do for your outdoor wedding decorations. If you need some help coming up with ideas, then this is a great place to start.

Outdoor Wedding Decorations with Lights

My sister got married under a huge 200 year old oak tree which is just magnificent to look at. Since most outdoor weddings in Texas are done in the evenings, then adding lights to your outdoor wedding decorations is a great place to start. Christmas lights, of course are a given. The tree behind my sister and her husband had Christmas lights going up the trunk of the tree, and in pictures the lights were beautiful, twinkly and romantic. Another idea to consider using lights in your outdoor wedding decorations is to use candles. On some of the lower branches, my sister had looped thick white ribbon, and tied it to small glass candle holders, and lit the candles. The effect was beautiful and elegant. You can use this idea, and hang something different from the tree, but I think this is best since the candlelight is so romantic.

Outdoor Wedding Decorations with an Arch

Many couples choose to bring in some kind of arch for outdoor weddings, and decorate it with greenery, flowers or lights. This can make a beautiful addition to your outdoor wedding, as well as help to set apart an area that you both will be standing with the minister. Make sure that your arch fits in with the location though. For example, my sister got married under a huge 200 year old oak tree, and using an arch would have been definite overkill since the branches of the tree were several feet over their heads anyway. So be sure to consider your location before going with an arch.

Outdoor Wedding Decorations with Flowers

You will want to set apart some place to be the altar, instead of just open space. A great way to do this is with two pillars or other kind of stands. My sister used white pillars, and placed two large flower arrangements on them to help create an area where you and your fiance will be standing. Depending on your situation and location of outdoor wedding, you may need to do a bit more. However, if you are having an outdoor wedding, then the location you choose should already have some beautiful scenery for your guests to view. Another option you can consider for your outdoor wedding decorations is to place some small greenery or flowers at the feet of the bridesmaids and groomsmen, and out a little. This will also help to set apart the area that is desiganted as your altar, or area where everyone involved in the ceremony needs to be.

One of the great benefits of having an outdoor wedding is that you may not need to do as much with your outdoor wedding decorations. The live nature around your guests, and natural beauty of it will add so much to your outdoor wedding. If you have any other ideas for outdoor wedding decorations, then be sure to write and let me know!
