Alternative Wedding Flowers

Green Weddings, Wedding Flowers No Comments »

Alternative Wedding Flowers for Green WeddingsAs I mentioned in my previous article, I’ve decided to explore the different options and ideas available for couples wanting to have a green wedding. Now when I say green weddings, I don’t mean the bride and groom want their wedding colors to be green, I’m talking about an environmentally friendly and conservative wedding. It’s true that most ordinary weddings out there produce a lot of waste, from the trashed decorations and food to an abundance of cut flowers slowly wilting away in the corner. Now while it is a shame that all of those beautiful cut flowers will only look beautiful for a few hours up until a few days after the wedding, it seems you just can’t have a wedding without them. Flowers lend a natural and enchanting beauty, and it’s hard to imagine a wedding without any kind flower at all. So if you are planning a green wedding and are looking for some alternative wedding flowers, then here are some great ideas to help you get started.

Grow Your Own Wedding Flowers

If you research the kinds of flowers that will grow and bloom naturally in season of your marriage, then you can easily find seeds and grow many of your wedding flowers yourself. You can grow them yourself organically without any pesticides or other harmful chemicals. You can grow the flowers out in large flower beds, or grow them in individual pots that you can place on your wedding tables for guests to take home with them. For more ideas, see my article on growing your own wedding flowers.

Finding Organic Blooms

If you don’t have much of a green thumb, or just don’t have the time to grow wedding flowers on your own, then you can always talk to your florist about finding organic blooms. Many people believe, and I haven’t seen the difference myself to tell you one way or the other, that organic blooms actually smell better than genetically engineered roses because they are grown naturally.

Using Potted Plants

Another option for conserving flowers in your weddings is to use potted plants that will not die once the wedding is over. Using potted plants, flowers and even small trees make excellent table centerpieces or other decorations. Later on, you can even transplant them into your garden for great memories, and to watch your plants grow.

Using Flower-Free Bouquets

Another idea that you can think about is to have your bridesmaids carry bouquets that are not fresh flowers. There are many options and ideas of items for them to carry, such as a Bible, silk flower arrangements, Chinese fans, jeweled boxes and so much more.

There are many different areas of your wedding where you can substitute cut flowers for either organic blooms or something non-floral all together. Use your imagination and talk to some of the florists in your area to be able to determine the best plan to keep your wedding as environmentally friendly as you can.

Choosing a Wedding Florist

Wedding Flowers No Comments »

Choosing a Wedding FloristThere are some parts of your wedding planning that will be more fun than the others. For many brides doing their wedding planning, choosing the flowers for their wedding and planning their wedding bouquets is very great fun. But the fact remains, you shouldn’t choose a florist randomly out of the phone book. That can be very risky business. Instead, you’ll need to make an informed decision about which florist you trust to handle such a huge aspect of your wedding. You need for your wedding flowers to be done correctly, and not to be swindled by over-inflated costs. So here are some important measures you need to take to ensure that you have a wedding florist that can not only handle your wedding, but that will do you right.

Talk to Your Friends

One important and often overlooked way of finding great wedding vendors in your area is to talk to your friends or family members who have been married recently. They can tell you which florists they loved, and which ones you should probably stay away from. If that doesn’t turn you up with a great wedding florist, then check out your local resources for florists for some companies in your area. Then, check with the Better Business Bureau to make sure they are refutable.

Ask to See Prior Work

Most florists will have some kind of book of their prior work which you can look through. From the pictures, you should be able to tell if they have the talent and expertise that you feel comfortable with for your wedding. Plus you can get some great ideas for decorating your ceremony if that florist has done weddings in that location before.

Stick With Your Budget

You don’t want to get taken on the costs of your wedding flowers, so have your wedding budget firmly in mind when you visit a florist. Instead of simply telling the florists what kind of flowers you like, and how you would like your dream wedding to look in terms of flowers - you’ll want to approach the situation differently. So instead of only talking about flowers, talk about money. Ask the florist how much they can do with X number of dollars. Then the florist will be able to talk to you realistically, and point you in the direction of some beautiful and less costly blooms. If not, then best find another florist.

Don’t Go Too Early!

There are some important factors you need to consider and have decided before you start looking for wedding florists. For example, you need to be able to tell your florist what your wedding colors will be (color swatches are handy), a tentative number of guests for centerpieces, the number of parents, grandparents, groomsmen, bridesmaids, ring bearers and even flower girls. So let me give you a piece of advice before going to your florist, if you don’t have any of the questions decided for your wedding, it will turn into a waste of time.

Your wedding flowers are an important part of your wedding day preparation. Even if you are not having flower wedding centerpieces, you will still need a bridal bouquet and flowers for your bridal party and to decorate your wedding ceremony. The right wedding flowers will add a touch of beauty and elegance to your wedding day, and they are sure to be noticed.

Grow Your Own Wedding Flowers

Wedding Flowers 2 Comments »

With the economy and prices being the way they are, I’m sure that many brides out there are going above and beyond looking for ways that they can save money on their weddings. I mean, after all, people seem to be doing it more and more in all other areas of their lives. I think just in my block alone, four of the six neighbors that we can see have added clothes lines in their back yards to help save energy costs. Personally, my husband and I are starting a large vegetable garden to help save money at the grocery store, as well as having great tasting fruit and vegetables. While my husband and I were picking out seeds for our garden, I noticed a huge display of flower seeds that are typically used in weddings. Sunflowers, Lilies, Sweet Pea, Tulips and so much more were sitting right there next to our carrots and green beans, and it really got me thinking about how much I paid for my wedding flowers. So, in current mood of being able to do things yourself, here are some great wedding flowers that you can easily grow yourself to save some money!

Growing Tulips

Tulips seem to be something that I look forward to every spring. You can plant tulip bulbs in October and have some beautiful flowers for an April or May wedding. Tulips are available in so many colors and textures that you can match them to nearly any color that you want in your wedding. Plus tulips are very simple to grow and make excellent, long-lasting cut flowers. The stems actually continue to grow after they’ve been cut so you can enjoy them for a long time.

Sweet Peas

Sweet peas are another flower near and dear to many hearts. They are easy and reliable to grow at home, and they make absolutely superb wedding flowers: delicate-looking, sweetly fragrant blossoms in a glorious range of colors on strong stems. Sweet peas grow as a vine, so give them a vertical structure to climb, like a trellis or a fence with full sun. If you sow them in March, you’ll have beautiful blooms in June. Sweet peas give off lots of blooms so a row of about 20 feet should do you pretty well. Plus, once you cut the blooms the more the plant will give you, so be prepared to enjoy this bloom for a long time!

Growing Sunflowers

Sunflowers are another favorite flower for weddings, and they’re super easy to grow as well. Just drop the seed halfway into good soil and add sun and water. Presto, anybody can do it. Sunflowers come in so many different dramatic colors and shapes that you’re sure to make a statement with yours. Plus many sunflowers have multi-flowering branches so you get extra blooms. Sunflowers are very sturdy, and work great as table centerpieces or even bouquets. Sunflowers are typically best for late summer weddings, so plan accordingly if you want sunflowers in your wedding.

Growing Amaryllis

Amaryllis are another popular flower for late autumn and winter weddings. They are known for producing large colorful blooms in the dead of winter. You can grow them in pots to place on table tops or cut the blooms for a bouquet. It takes 7-10 weeks for an amaryllis to bloom, so be sure to plan accordingly. If you are planning to cut the blooms, cut them once the first bud has colored and is just about to open and place them in a sturdy vase. Kept cool, they’ll last for quite a while.

Growing Roses

Roses are another traditional favorite when it comes to wedding flowers. These beautiful blooms are not very difficult to grow, and provide some beautiful blooms your wedding table and bouquet. Roses, as we know, come in all kinds of colors and shades, and you can easily grow some beautiful roses for your wedding day.

There are lots of gorgeous flowers you can easily grow yourself for beautiful wedding blooms at a fraction of the cost of going to a florist would be. If you consider yourself to have a gangrene thumb, then consider asking a friend or family member who can grow flowers if they would consider growing the blooms for you. That way you don’t have to stress about the flowers along with everything else that you’re having to plan for the wedding. But I would definitely consider checking out ways to grow your own wedding flowers. You can find flower seeds nearly anywhere, look and see what kinds of flowers you like, and if you would be able to easily grow them yourself. Let me know how it goes!
